Abstract

A binder for refractories comprises a colloidal, viscous, aqueous solution of aluminium-chromium III-phosphate containing 20-95% of powdered iron and/or iron oxide. Optional additions are (1) refractory filler which, when a composite article is to be formed from a number of refractory units, is of the same composition (or mean composition when the units are of different materials) as the units; (2) Agent inhibiting gas formation from reaction of the phosphate in the iron or oxide; and (3) a thermosetting and/or silicone resin for low temperature strength. By means of the binder bricks of e.g. magnesite, chrome are bonded to steel cases.
