Abstract
708,023. Electrolytic cells. BAMAGMEGUIN AKT.-GES. Oct, 15, 1951 [Feb. I, 1951; July 21, 1951], No. 23915/51. Class 4<SP>1</SP>. An electrolytic cell for electrolysing alkali-metal salt solutions comprises a mercury cathode and an anode having active portions extending in a substantially horizontal plane and additional active portions protruding from such plane whereby the active surface area of the anode is incurved. In the arrangement shown, graphite plates P with distance pieces D are held together by a rod B of ebonite, which also holds graphite current conductors R, R<SP>1</SP>. The plates P instead of being vertical may be inclined. The upper surfaces P<SP>1</SP> of the recesses between the plates may be inclined to the horizontal to facilitate discharge of the gases resulting from the electrolysis. They may be inclined upwardly from the centre to both sides. The anode may also comprise a grid-like plate with or without projecting graphite pieces thereon, or may comprise a plurality of grid-like or comb-shaped plates preferably of graphite which are held together by ebonite rods.
