Abstract
An electrode for the prodn of a gas in an electrolysis cell with vertical electrodes comprises a vertical conductor plate pierced by holeS, the overall open area increasing from bottom to top of the plate. The area distribution across the width of the plate is uniform. Each hole pref has a small projection along its upper edge to direct the gas formed on the active surface of the electrode through the holes. The electrodes can be used in diaphragm cells or cells using a selectively permeable membrane for electrolysing aq. soln. of alkali metal halides or for the prodn. of hydrogen and alkali metal chlorate. The electrode reduces the loss by the joule effect across the electrolyte. It reduces the mechanical influences on the diaphragm or membrane during electrolysis. It makes possible the use of stronger currents and reduces the necessary distance between anode and cathode, which results in an increase in cell prodn. capacity without increasing floor space. The invention allows the overall area of the holes to be reduced relative to the total electrode surface, which increases the cell productivity.
