Abstract
Cell comprises a raw material AlCl3 feed port and Cl2 discharge ports in its top section, a molten metal discharge reservoir in its bottom section and an electrode element in the middle section. The electrode element comprises an array of >=3 funnel shaped electrode plates with centrally located holes in vertical alignment. The outer side edges of the plates define another passage with the housing wall. One outer electrode plate acts as anode and the other as cathode, with the intermediate plate(s) acting as bi-polar electrodes. Raw material is charged down the central passage and Cl2 is discharged via the outer passage. The produced Al does not come into contact with chlorine, as in prior art processes of this type, and hence is not rechlorinated, thereby raising the efficiency of the cell.
