Abstract

1,259,822. Electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solutions. FRIEDRICH UHDE G. m. b. H. Jan. 20, 1969 [Jan. 20, 1968], No.3082/69. Heading C7B. In the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solutions the electrolyte is fed into the electrolysis space between a metal anode and a mercury cathode directly from a space enclosed within the body of the anode. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 2 and the corresponding plan view in Fig. 3, a flat plate 14 of titanium is welded at its point of contact to a pressed titanium sheet 15. Fresh electrolyte passes to the anode through hollow stem 1 from which it is distributed and passes out of the face of the anode through rows of holes 3 in enclosed channels 2. Rows of holes 4 between channels 2 for the escape of bubbles of gas formed in the electrolysis space. All holes in plate 14 are preferably rounded at their bottom edges to prevent raised current densities at these parts. The active face of the anode may be coated with a protective layer to prevent passivation and amalgamation. Copper tube 10 surrounding the stem 1 serves to supply current to the anode and is protected against attack by moist chlorine by a protective layer 17.
