Abstract
1305892 Electrolytic production of alkali metal chlorate ELECTRIC REDUCTION CO OF CANADA Ltd 9 Feb 1970 [8 Nov 1968] 52999/68 Heading C7B Electrolytic apparatus for the manufacture of alkali metal chlorate comprises at least two cells containing bi-polar electrodes; at least one housing for the cells; a source of electric current supply arranged such that each cell has a virtual ground, the liquor being at substantially ground potential at at least one point in each cell; at least one reservoir for aqueous alkali metal chloride at ground potential; and means for passing aqueous chloride from the reservoir to each cell housing and for returning aqueous hypochlorite from each cell housing to the reservoir. The cells may comprise mono-polar electrodes at intervals in the bi-polar electrode pack. The cell housings may be immersed in the reservoir or mounted separately, and each cell may be provided with a reservoir or one may serve the whole plant. In the form shown electrolyte is cycled between the reservoir 200 and the electrolytic cells 100a, 100b, via pump 132, cooler 135 and pipes 133, 134 and via pipes 136, 137 and gas separator 138. Electric current is supplied from a 3-phase rectified supply.
