Abstract
1,267,516. Bi-polar electrolytic cells. A. JOHNSON & CO: (LONDON) Ltd. Sept. 26, 1969 [Oct. 1, 1968], No. 46628/68. Heading C7B. A bi-polar electrolytic cell, for electrolyzing NaCl solution or sea water to form NaOCl and H 2 , comprises a vertical row of spaced-apart electrodes comprising at least one (e. g. three) bi-polar intermediate electrode 3 having a lower face inclined to the horizontal, the lower face of the upper electrode e. g. cathode 13 also being inclined to the horizontal, within an enclosed housing 5 having an inlet 17 and outlet 11 arranged so that electrolyte flows therebetween in a never descending path in succession through all the spaces between the electrodes across their faces. As shown, spaces between wedge-shaped electrodes may be interconnected only by holes 15, 16 therethrough near their thinnest parts; seals e.g. O-rings 2 may be provided between their edges and the insde surface of the housing which may be of PVC or polypropylene. Connecting conductors 10, 12 may pass through holes 18 in the housing end-plates 7 and be screwed into the anode 4 and cathode 13. The electrodes may be made of graphite, with or without cladding e.g. of Ti for cathodic surfaces and Ti covered with Pt for anodic surfaces, Cu or Al, or epoxy or polyester resin reinforced with C fibres. Two rows of similar spaced-apart electrodes may be disposed in a straight line within a tubular housing in turn surrounded by another tubular housing, the space between being divided by two partitions into an electrolyte inlet chamber and a treated liquid outlet chamber, each chamber having two openings into the first and last interelectrode spaces in the rows. Each electrode may be assembled with its own housing section encircling it.
