Abstract

A diaphragm electrolytic cell comprises an alternating succession of anodes and cathodes in the form of alternate wedges all of the same angle, each anode being fitted in the space between two contiguous cathodes so that the distance between the parallel faces of the electrodes is determined by the penetration of a series of electrodes of the same sign into the space between the other electrodes. As shown in Fig. Ia, graphite anodes 1 may be suspended with their ridges horizontal pointing downwards by current-carrying stems 2 adapted to slide in the cell cover 3 by a graphite torus 4 to allow vertical displacement of the anodes during electrolysis, while the metal cathodes 5 carrying the diaphragm 6 are fixed with their ridges horizontal pointing upwards and parallel to the ridges of the anodes. The cathodes may be attached to two half-slides mounted in the cell frame and which can be pulled out from two opposite side walls (see Fig. IIc, not <PICT:1014807/C6-C7/1> shown). Alternatively, the electrodes may be arranged with their ridges vertical with the anodic and cathodic cases being mounted in the cell frame in the form of slides (see Fig. IIIc, not shown).
