Abstract
1,169,119. Electrolysis cells. PULLMAN Inc. June 5, 1967, No.25924/67. Heading C7B. [Also in Division H1] An electrolysis cell comprises a first group of electrode, 115 of common polarity alternating with a second group of electrodes, 118, of opposite polarity and dipping into an electrolyte bath, the upper portion above the electrolyte surface of each electrode of said first group having a horizontal opening, therethrough, said electrodes being retained in position by at least one electrically conductive bar, 128, slideably received through the openings and being locked in position by adjustable connectors attached to the top of each electrode and exerting downward pressure on said bar. As shown, the electrodes are supported on supports 120 in the lower portion of the cell. The electrolyte may be aqueous sodium chloride or barium chloride and the cathodes, 115, of mercury, the mercury running down the electrode surfaces from trough 129. In alternative arrangements Figs.3 and 4 (not shown), the mercury flows into a chamber inside the electrode from which it escapes on to the electrode surfaces, either through porous walls of metal screen or through holes in recessed walls. The adjustable connectors may be screws, 131 or springs Fig.6 (not shown) and where springs are used the upper portion of the electrode may be removably bolted on to the lower portion.
