Abstract

1,193,143. Fuel cell. PULLMAN Inc. 5 June, 1967, No. 25925/67. Heading H1B. An electrochemical cell, Fig. 2, comprises at least one set of 3 adjacent vertically disposed frames 161, 166, 163, interconnected by removable securing means 171, the outer frames 161, 163 comprising supports of electrodes of opposite polarity, the central frame 166 being an insulating spacer and having passages 167, 169 communicating with its interior for supply and removal of electrolyte, at least one electrode 161 comprising two porous side walls defining a chamber between them, the outer surface of each wall being in contact with the electrolyte space and the frame of this electrode having passages 162, 168 communicating with its interior for the supply and removal of fluid reactant. The other electrode may be of the same structure having passages 164, 176 for supply and removal of reactant. The cell may be a fuel cell employing 0À1 to 2% barium amalgam as the reactant at the first electrode. This may be prepared by dissolving barium metal in mercury, by contacting BaCl 2 with sodium amalgam at 90-100‹ F. or by electrolysing an aqueous solution of BaCl 2 with a mercury cathode. The other reactant may be oxygen and the electrolyte may be an aqueous solution. A plurality of these sets of three, separated by further spacers may form a battery of fuel cells which may be supported on a baseplate (172, Fig. 1, not shown). Bus-bars 173, 174 may conduct current from the electrodes.
