An electrolytic cell, e.g. for decomposing alkaline chloride solutions with a heavy current, e.g. 30,000 to 40,000 amps., comprises a rectangular iron trough 1 and an iron cover insulated from the trough, a number of cathode units 3, 4 suspended in the trough 1, each unit comprising a hollow girder 3 extending across the cell and having attached at opposite faces, e.g. by welding, outwardly extending hollow cathodes 4 each comprising a metal grid covered with a diaphragm, and graphite plate anodes 6 carried by the cover and extending between the cathodes 4. The cover is divided into sections 5 each having upwardly directed recesses 10 corresponding in number to the anodes 6 which are electrically connected to the sections by a highly electrically conductive material in the recesses 10. The sections 5 are insulated from the support 3 by a material in grooves 8 and channels 9 in which flanges 7 on the sections 5 are sealed. The cathodes 3, 4 are electrically connected to the trough 1 by bars 17. An electrolyte inlet and gas outlets, e.g. 13, are disposed at the top of the cell and a drain at the bottom.
