Abstract
872,994. Electrolytic cells. FARBENFABRIK WOLFEN VEB. Oct. 25,1957 [Oct. 27, 1956], No. 33455/57. Class 41. An electrolytic cell, e.g. for electrolysing an alkali metal chloride solution, comprises a trough 1, anodes mounted vertically in the trough, and hollow cathodes 4, e.g. of a metal grid 4a, mounted horizontally in alternation with the anodes, each cathode having a diaphragm 6 and being detachably mounted at one end in a fluid-tight manner in openings 19 in the trough 1. The openings 19 are tapered to accommodate a tapered rubber sleeve 18 on the cathode 4, a flange 7 being welded to the end of the cathode and being positioned externally of the wall of the trough. Copper strips 14 lead current from a bar 15 to the flanges 7 which have outlets 10, 11 for hydrogen and alkali lye, respectively, from the interior of the cathode. A liquid-level indicator may be provided on the lye outlet pipe. The far ends of the cathodes have rubber sleeves 9 which fit tightly in recesses in the wall of the trough. An inlet for electrolyte and an outlet for chlorine are provided in a cover which supports the anodes.
