Abstract
519,814. Cells for the electrolysis of fused electrolytes. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Oct. 4, 1938, No. 28818. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1937. [Class 41] The anode in a fused salt electrolytic cell is a vertical cup-shaped anode with a plurality of openings in the side walls leading from the interior to the exterior. The anode is preferably of graphite and the openings may be substantially vertical slots. A steel sheet 1, Fig. 1, lined with firebrick constitutes the cell in which the anode 6 comprising a plurality of graphite segments each provided with a plurality of holes 11, bolted to a steel block 7 the top of which is protected by firebrick 10. Above the cathode 3 is a collecting trough 4 and take-off pipe 18 for the cathodic product, and between it and the anode is a diaphragm 5. Gas issuing from the anode is collected by cone 12 into chamber 13 where it is separated from liquid, the liquid passing through the slots of and down graphite tube 15 and thence through openings 11 to cause a continuous circulation of electrolyte. Other anode constructions are illustrated. Specification 516,775 is referred to.
