[Class 41] In apparatus of the filter-press type for the production of persulphuric acid and persalts such as ammonium persulphate, the anode of one cell and the cathode of the next are mounted to form a chamber through which a cooling liquid is passed. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 2, the intermediate electrodes are bipolar, the cathode side being formed by a tray 1 of lead or graphite and the anode side by a thin sheet 2 of platinum mounted over the tray to form a cooling chamber 3 through which liquid is passed by pipes W, W<1>. The electrodes are separated by diaphragms 6 mounted between insulating rings 7, 8. The cells are preferably of circular cross-section. Electrolyte is passed through the anode and cathode chambers by pipes E, E<1> and F, F<1> respectively. Diaphragms may be dispensed with. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 4 each electrode comprises a tray 1 having a perforated upper surface over which the anode surface 2 is mounted. Cooling liquid enters by pipes W and leaves by pipes W<1> extending up to the anode surface. The diaphragms 6 are of tray form. The anolyte and catholyte are independently circulated through the successive cells from top to bottom, the overflow pipes E being so placed as to ensure, covering of the cathode surface ; gas collects in pockets 11. The insulating rings separating the electrodes may be provided with grooves or apertures above the electrolyte level for access to the electrodes or diaphragms.
