Abstract
465,737. Electrolytic cells. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Nov. 12, 1935, No. 31329. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1934. [Class 41] In the electrolytic production of per - compounds such as persulphuric acid and persulphates in a diaphragm cell, means are provided for maintaining the anode and cathode liquids at substantially the same level. The apparatus shown in plan in Fig. 1 and in sectional elevation in Fig. 3 comprises an elongated container 3 of acid resistant material containing a number of porous pots 4 constituting the anode chambers. The cathode is constituted in part by a cooling coil 5 of lead and in part by a lead box 9 enclosing all the pots 4. Connection to the cathode is made by metal strips 25. The box 9 is provided with downward lips 11 surrounding each diaphragm and with an upstanding flange 13 running the length of the cell. On one side the flange 13 is bent into a series of lips over which pass tubes 7 from the anode pots whereby anolyte overflows to the next cell in the series, entering the anode chamber thereof as at 27. The tubes 7 are provided with gas vents 17. On the other side the flange 13 is bent to form a single lip 12 which receives catholyte overflowing from the preceding cell. The top of the cathode box 9 may be provided with apertures 28, 29. The arrangement of the anodes within the porous pots may be as described in Specification 362,579.
