Abstract
1367810 Diaphragm electrolyzer SOLVAY & CIE 21 Dec 1972 [23 Dec 1971] 59090/72 Heading C7B Diaphragm electrolyzer of the series-connected e.g. filter press type with vertical bipolar electrodes, for the production of chlorine, hydrogen and caustic alkali by electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solution, comprises at least two individual cells 1 surmounted by a tank e.g. a bell lid 7 containing the solution, each cell being in communication with the tank via an individual duct 19 extending over a major part of the entire height of the cell terminating at or near the cell bottom 22, having a passage 16 for removing chlorine passing through the tank bottom 6 and communicating with a conduit 23 in the tank terminating above the solution level, and having separate passages 17, 18 for removing hydrogen and caustic alkali. The duct 19 is preferably formed in the side wall of the cell and terminates at its upper end at aperture 21 at the tank bottom, e.g. a partition sealingly covering all the cells. Each cell may comprise peripheral steel and insulating frames 10, 20 supporting a wire mesh or expanded steel cathode 11 covered with diaphragm and a graphite or platinized titanium anode 12 separated by metal struts 13 to form cathode and anode chambers 14, 15.
