Abstract
880,838. Electrolytic cells. DIAMOND ALKALI CO. June 4, 1959 [June 6, 1958], No. 19165/59. Class 41. An electrolytic cell for electrolysing alkali metal chloride comprises a base 4 supporting inner and outer conductive, e.g. steel, walls 3, 2, forming a peripheral chamber 5 from which catholyte and hydrogen are withdrawn and an inner chamber containing anodes 10, e.g. of graphite or magnetite, vertically mounted on the base 4, a plurality of foraminous, tubular, metal cathodes 6 disposed between the anodes 10, Fig. 5 (which is a horizontal section) and extending horizontally across the cell at least between the walls 3, being fixed in holes 8 therein and providing communication between the interior of the cathodes 6 and the chamber 5, a liquid permeable diaphragm 26, e.g. of asbestos, completely separating the anodes 10 from adjacent cathodes 6. The cathodes, which may be steel wire cloth or seamed steel tubes, each extend substantially the height of the cell and form with the walls 3 anolyte chambers 22 which are open top and bottom but closed at each end by asbestos 26 which also passes over the top and bottom of the cathodes 6 which are thereby completely en. closed. The cathodes are supported by metal straps 25 and receive current by a bus-bar 13, the anodes 10 being supplied by connections 41, 42, base 4, copper grid 12 and a lead bonding layer 14. Brine is delivered to chambers 22 through pipes 36, 37, a chlorine outlet 38 being provided and the chamber 5 having outlets for hydrogen and caustic. Catholyte may additionally reach the chamber 5 via holes 9 in the wall 3 after traversing the diaphragm 26. U.S.A. Specification 1,862,244 is referred to.
