Abstract

1,153,502. Electrolytic diaphragm cells. DIAMOND ALKALI CO. May 6, 1966 [May 6, 1965], No. 20236/66. Heading C7B. An electrolytic cell for the electrolysis of sodium chloride comprises a top member 4; a base member 38 provided with an electricallyconductive one-piece grid support 40 which guides and supports a plurality of vertically-disposed anodes 42; a plurality of hollow tubular foraminous electrically conductive metal cathodes 26 which are interposed between the anodes and are supported by a cathode carrying member 22; a cathode end screen 74 fitted between and in electrical connection with adjacent cathodes and constituting part of the cathode array; a fluid permeable diaphragm covering the cathodes and the cathode end screens and halogen resistant liquid-impermeable gasket member, 46, containing a multiplicity of channels and interposed between the cathode carrying member 22 and the top and base members, 4 and 38 respectively. The anode grid may be copper and the anodes may be positioned in the grid support by frictional engagement, or with lead packing 48 provided therebetween. The anodes may be of graphite, magnetite or magnetitecoated material. The cathode tubes may be formed of perforated metal sheet, or of wire cloth, and the diaphragm material may be deposited in situ, upon the outer surfaces of the wire mesh cathode and upon the end screen members 74. Within the cathode tubes may be positioned horizontal and vertical straps 58 to provide stability of the cathode. In the form shown cathodic products collect in the space 24 formed between the inner cathode supporting wall 22 and the outer wall 20 from which it is withdrawn via outlet (32 Fig. 1 not shown). The halogen gas formed collects in the cover member 4 from whence it is withdrawn via vent (10 Fig. 1 not shown).
