Abstract
<PICT:1087529/C6-C7/1> A diaphragm cell for the electrolysis of aqueous solutions of alkali metal halides has a plurality of anodes 1 of titanium, niobium, tantalum or alloys thereof, having at least one surface plated with a platinum group metal, each anode being secured in electrical contact with an elongate current distributer 3 which traverses the cell and extends through at least one side wall to be connected to the extensions of other current distributers for attachement to a supply of direct current. The anode may comprise sheet, wire mesh, perforated plate or expanded metal and may take the form of a flat plate, or as shown, of a U-section, the edges thereof being either welded to the current distributer 3 or bolted to fins (18) welded thereto Fig. 5 (not shown). The extension 7 of current distributer 3 may be located within a branch (13) of the side wall of the cell by means of a flanged bush (14), and a seal provided therebetween by a molded sleeve (12), Fig. 3 (not shown), the extensions being secured to a bus-bar (15). Two anode sections may be bolted to the current distributer at 180 DEG from one another Fig. 4 (not shown). The current distributer 3 may be of copper or aluminium contained within a sheath of Ti, Nb, Ta or alloy thereof. The cell may comprise hard rubber lined mild steel.
