Abstract

905,141. Electrolytic cells for chlorine and caustic alkali production. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 23, 1961 [July 11, 1960], No. 24082/60. Class 41. An electrolytic cell, or multi-cell assembly connected in parallel or series, for the production of chlorine and caustic alkali, is provided with a non-conducting porous diaphragm held between a foraminate sheet-metal cathode and a foraminate titanium anode coated with platinum or an alloy thereof; whereby the anode-cathode gap can be eliminated except for the thickness of the porous diaphragm itself and a thin anode-supporting sheet and also the electrical resistance of the electrolyte between anode and cathode is substantially reduced. The cell can be operated at 4 kA/m.<SP>2</SP>. The cell consists of a non-conducting porous diaphragm 1 held between and in contact with a perforate or reticulate sheet-metal cathode 3, e.g. of steel, iron or titanium and a like sheet titanium anode support 2, coated with a platinum metal as the working anode surface 4. Platinum alloys, comprising metals of the same group, may be used. The asbestos diaphragm 1 is supported on the anode side, so that turbulence in the electrolyte owing to evolution of chlorine from the anode surface causes a minimum of mechanical damage to the diaphragm; and it is stated that there is not much mixing of anode and cathode products through the diaphragm.
