Abstract

1,160,999. Electrode assembly. IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd. April 19, 1968 [May 2, 1967], No.20301/67. Heading C7B. An electrode assembly for an electrolytic e.g. diaphragm cell for electrolysis of brine to produce chlorine and sodium hydroxide comprises an impervious, corrosion resistant electrode support and a plurality of electrodes e.g. anodes 10 releasably supported by the support, which project from one surface of the support for location in the electrolyte and from the opposite surface of the support into releasable connection with an electrical e.g. copper conductor 11 which is thus separated from the electrolyte. The anodes maybe of graphite, or a metal having the anodic polarization properties of Ti and provided with an active surface e.g. platinized Ti, or Nb and/or Ta with or without Ti, Zr having a coating of the platinum group metals or alloys or platinum group metal oxides. The assembly may comprise a series of beams clamped to one another to sandwich at least one electrode between each pair of adjacent beams, preferably in recesses. Hollow cathode fingers 23 with layers of asbestos diaphragm 24 vacuum deposited thereon are positioned between the two steel walls 22 of the cell.
