Abstract

1440483 Bipolar electrolytic cells P P G INDUSTRIES Inc 26 Nov 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 54756/73 Heading C7B [ Also in Division H1] A bipolar electrolytic diaphragm cell comprises a plurality of cells in series, with cathodes 37 of one cell and anodes 21 of the next cell supported in bipolar electrical and mechanical configuration upon a common electrolyte-resistant structural member having a backplate 1 with cathodic surface 5 and anodic surface 9 and a conductor/ connector 61, for conducting electricity from the cathode 37 to the anode 21 and connecting them to the backplate 1, comprising a copper member (e.g. stud) 65 with a catholyte-resistant member (e.g. steel cap) 45 bonded e.g. friction welded to its cathode facing end 73 and an anolyte-resistant member (e.g. Ti stud) 33 friction, ultrasonic or detonation welded to its opposite anode facing end 69, the latter welded bond (69) preferably having a conductivity greater than 1.5 x 10<SP>4</SP> mho and no third phase between the member 65 and 33. An anode 21, e.g. comprising blades 25 and base 29, and a cathode 37, e.g. comprising mesh fingers 41 covered with asbestos, resin or permionic membrane diaphragm 53, may also be bonded to the members 33 and 45 respectively. A steel catholyte-resistant sleeve 77 may be provided on the copper member (stud) 65, bonded e.g. friction welded to member 45 and backplate 1. The anodes may be of graphite or Pt group metal (oxide) on a valve metal base. The anodic surface 9 may be separated from the cathodic surface 5 of the backplate by a Cu washer 13. Member 33 of the conductor/connector 61 may be bonded to a Ti washer 17 in turn bonded to the anodic surface 9. The cell may be used in brine (NaCl) electrolysis for producing chlor-alkali or NaClO 3 . Alternatively the conductor/connector 61 may be used in bipolar fuel cells.
