Abstract

1523045 Preventing leak currents in electrolysis ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 26 May 1976 [4 June 1975] 21870/76 Heading C7B A chlor-alkali cell comprising not less than 20 unit cells arranged in a bipolar series with a cationexchange membrane dividing each cell and the anode of one cell being connected with the cathode of the next via a partition between the cells has the diameters and lengths of the individual electrolyte feed and discharge pipes chosen so that the leak current per unit cell does not exceed 4% of the electrolysis current per unit cell. The pipes are non-conductive e.g. PTFE, PVC, asbestos, polyester or synthetic rubber and feed (or discharge) the unit cells in parallel from/to common headers. The membrane may have a current efficiency for Na<SP>+</SP> # 70%. The membrane may be based on a fluorocarbon or protected from chlorine attack by a non-selective fluorocarbon or asbestos membrane.
