Abstract
1423251 Electrolytic cell for producing alkali metal chlorates PENNWALT CORP 7 May 1973 [18 July 1972] 21590/73 Heading C7B A diaphragmless electrolytic cell for producing an alkali metal chlorate (e.g. NaClO 3 ) from an alkali metal brine comprises a tank (e.g. of steel) substantially flat hollow cathodic modules, each being of generally boxlike configuration having an open top and bottom with spaced apart cathode plates C; a generally flat anode A suspended within each cathodic module; means 24, 26 for introducing the brine into the tank; and means 76 for withdrawing alkali metal chloride-chlorate from the tank. The ends of the flat cathodic modules are welded to opposite sides of the tank at (36), Fig. 4 (not shown). The anodes are suspended from an electrically conductive Ti or Ti alloy headboard 44 which constitutes a lid for the tank but is electrically insulated therefrom by a gasket 43. In the modules, the anodes are spaced from the cathodes by insulating members 40 and 58. As shown, the cathodes C are steel plates slotted at 28 and reinforced by current distributor bars 30. Current supply to the cathodes is by bus strips 68 and 70 in face-to-face contact with the exterior of the tank, and current supply to the anodes is by a bus plate 60 in face-to-face contact with the exterior surface of the headboard. Electrolyte being pumped through the cell cools the buses which may be of Cu or Al. Heat generated in the cell may be removed either by cooling the recirculating liquor in an external heat exchanger or by pumping cooling water through internal coils (not shown). The anodes may be fabricated of a valve metal (such as Ti) which is coated on both sides with Ni or a platinum group (e.g. Pt or Pd) metal or such a metal oxide. The cathodes, instead of being plates, may be in the form of expanded metal, mesh or screen, interlaced strips. The liquor discharged from the cell is passed through a degasser (78), Fig. 1 (not shown). Specification 1423251 is referred to.
