Abstract

1,127,484. Electrolytic diaphragm cell. MURGATROYD'S SALT & CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. Jan.31, 1967 [Feb.25, 1966], No.8349/66. Heading C7B. A diaphragm cell for the electrolysis of aqueous solutions of alkali metal halides has a plurality of anodes comprising electrode sections of Ti or similar metal having at least one surface plated with a Pt group metal, the plurality of anodes being detachably mounted upon and in electrical contact with a tray-like member of Ti or similar metal forming part of the base or cover of the cell and means for connection of the tray-like member to a supply of direct current. "Ti or similar metal" is restricted to Ti, Nb or Ta or certain alloys of Ti, Nb or Ta. "Pt group metal" means any of those metals Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, Os or Ir or alloys of any two or more such metals. Fig.1 shows a tray-like member 4 having ribs 3 to which anodes 1 are bolted. The tray-like member 4 is mounted in a mild steel bath 7 and extensions 6 of the ribs 3 are firmly cast in Al which is introduced while molten into the space 8 and solidifies. Current connection to the Al is through a Cu lug (9) Fig.2 (not shown). Instead of casting the rib extensions 6 in Al, they may be fitted into slots (14), Fig.3 (not shown), in a Cu plate (15). A horizontal extension (16) of the plate (15) projects through a wall of the bath (7) and serves as a current connection. Alternatively Cu or Al bars (17, 18), Fig.4 (not shown) may be clamped in the spaces defined by the rib extensions 6. Horizontal extensions (21) of the bars (17, 18) pass through a slot in the bath 7 and serve as a current connection.
