Abstract
1406592 Extracting metal electrolytically; cathodes ENVIROTECH CORP 18 Feb 1974 [20 Feb1973] 7253/74 Heading C7B Electrolytic apparatus for extracting metal from a metal-bearing electrolyte solution, e.g. electrorefining or -winning from an acid leach of a metalbearing ore or concentrate, comprises a tank 12 having an inlet 90 and outlet 81 for continuous flow therethrough of electrolyte, a cathode 13 comprising a smooth conductive surface 30 for metal 41 to deposit thereon and formed from a plurality of relatively small conductors 31 each of cross-sectional area between 0.0005 and 0.25 mm held spaced apart at a distance at least 0.25mm by an insulating matrix 32 and connected to negative pole of D.C.source e.g. via conductive base 34 inside holder 43, and an anode 14 e.g. of Ti or Pb-Sb, the anode and cathode being mounted with their conductive surfaces spaced face-to-face. The conductors 31 may be wires of 0.025 to 0.15 mm, or rectangular in cross-section of dimension 0.025 to 0.1 mm by 0.5 to 2.5 mm, spaced apart a maximum of 0.6 mm. The apparatus preferably includes a scraper (72), Fig. 8 (not shown), reciprocating in a solid-walled slot in the conductive anode surface, Fig. 6 (not shown), and drive 48 for rotating the cathode via shaft 46 for dislodging metal particles from the conductive cathode surface. The anode may comprise a divider (55), Fig. 7 (not shown), separating front and back chambers 56, 57. A cell may comprise a single anode-cathode pair or a plurality of pairs connected in series or parallel.
