Abstract

1,132,281. Electrolysis of hydrogen chloride. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP. Aug.31, 1965 [Aug.31, 1964], No.37219/65. Heading C7B. An electrolytic cell for the electrolysis of hydrogen chloride is divided by a porous diaphragm of synthetic plastics material, e.g. of polypropylene, polytetrafluoroethylene or chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, into an anode chamber having anode means made of graphite, and a cathode chamber having cathode means made of steel, nickel plated steel or a nickel alloy, and is provided with a cell cover and with a pipe made of synthetic plastics material communicating with the cathode chamber for the withdrawal of depleted catholyte. Electrolysis is carried out by feeding an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid and alkali metal chloride into the anode chamber of the cell from whence it passes through the porous diaphragm to the cathode chamber, maintaining the anolyte pH less than 1, applying a voltage across the electrodes to yeild chlorine at the anode and hydrogen at the cathode and withdrawing a depleted catholyte from the cell. The depleted catholyte preferably has a pH of less than 7. The aqueous feed solution may contain 5 - 20% hydrogen chloride and 1 - 20% alkali metal chloride and may also contain a corrosion inhibitor e.g. a primary, secondary, tertiary or a hydroxyl amine. The depleted catholyte preferably contains less than 20 gm/l hydrogen chloride and has a pH of less than 7. The cell shown comprises a plurality of anode plates 50 which extend through a corrosive-resistant layer 54 e.g. asphalt, polyester resin, PVC, or P.T.F.E. to contact a conductive layer 52 e.g. of lead, copper or brass, which is attached to the anode bus-bar 51. A mesh cathode formed of steel, nickel plated steel or nickel alloy, covered with a diaphragm 16, extends between each pair of anodes in the form of fingerlike projections 58. The upper part 60 of the diaphragm is non-porous to prevent hydrogen from passing into the anolyte. The cell is provided with electrolyte inlet 18, outlet 62 for depleted catholyte, and outlets 24, 28 for chlorine and hydrogen respectively. The cell top 64 may be of concrete lined with plastics material 66, or may be of a material such as polyester.
