Abstract

471,912. Electrolytic production of caustic soda and sulphuric acid. March 12, 1936, No. 7515. Convention date, June 27, 1935. Drawings to Specification. [Class 41] In the electrolysis of sodium sulphate solutions with a mercury cathode, a diaphragm is employed of such low permeability that at 40‹ C. and a pressure of 35 cm. water gauge, it allows not more than 10 cc. and preferably less than 5 cc. of water per sq. dcm. to pass through it per minute. The mercury is disposed at the bottom of a nonconducting cell with the diaphragm above it, the diaphragm being slightly inclined to the horizontal to permit escape of small quantities of hydrogen; an anode of lead or a non-oxidizing lead alloy is located above the diaphragm. Electrolyte is withdrawn from the cathode chamber, replenishedwith sodium sulphate and restored to the cell. The amalgam formed is removed and decomposed for production of caustic soda. An anode liquor containing 28 per cent by weight of sulphuric acid may be obtained.. The diaphragm may consist of a number of interlocking sections forming a shallow V, the limbs of which are at an inclination of 1 in 25. The diaphragm material may consist of 53 per cent silica and 47 per cent alumina having a pore volume of 39 per cent and an average pore diameter of 4À3 Á.
