Abstract

516,775. Fused electrolyte cells. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. July 6, 1938, No. 20060. Convention date, July 6, 1937. [Class 41] In the electrolysis of fused salts means are provided to promote' a rapid surface flow of electrolyte at the point at which gas is disengaged therefrom; splashing of electrolyte and consequent clogging of the gas exit is thereby prevented. In a cell for the the electrolysis of alkali metal choride of the kind comprising a cylindrical anode separated by a wire gauze diaphragm from an external annular cathode, a gas - collecting hood 6 is mounted above the anode and is surmounted by a graphite dome 7. Electrolyte and gas flow upwardly between the dome 7 and a graphite tube 14 ; the electrolyte overflows through slots 21 into the interior of the tube and returns to the anode space, the gas becoming disengaged without splashing. The tube 14 is provided with an extension 13 on which are lugs 17 normally resting on a ring 15 supported by arms 16. In order to prevent freezing of electrolyte in the slots 21 during short intervals in running, the tube 14 may be lowered by turning it so that the lugs 17 engage grooves in the ring; the ring is thereupon engaged by the upper stops 19. In a modification the slots 21 are dispensed with, the electrolyte flowing over the top of the graphite tube. The tube 14 may be of metal when a non- corrosive gas such as hydrogen is being collected. The hood 6 is formed with an annular metal collector 5 surmounting the cathode.
