Abstract

273,672. Allen Electrolytic Cell Corporation, (Assignees of Allen, H. I., and Ayerst, D. B.). July 3, 1926, [Convention date]. Cells; electrodes; diaphragms.- A cell for the electrolysis of brine to obtain caustic soda comprises a perforated metal cathode 11, folded to form compartments for the reception of two or more anodes 21; rectangular perforated plates, not shown, are welded across the ends of the cathode. The interior of the cathode is lined with an asbestos diaphragm. The cathode and diaphragm are provided with flanges which rest on inturned flanges 2 on an iron tank 1 and are surmounted by a concrete hood 3 clamped by bolts 4 having bottom loops engaging hooks 5 on the tank. The hood 3 is provided with a cover 19 having apertures for the passage of conductors 20 integral with but narrower than the anodes 21. The anodes and conductors are shaped to allow cutting of a pair from a rectangular piece of material without waste. The anodes may be provided at the bottom with vertical saw-cuts the ends of which become rounded in use. The anodes are spaced by members 25 and supported bv pins 28 resting in recesses in the hood 3. The hood is provided with electrolyte supply. pipe and a gas escape pipe, and the tank 1 is provided with a pipe for withdrawal of alkali. The cathode flange is provided with an extension or connection to a busbar. A number of anodes connected to a busbar 30 may be disposed the length of the cathode. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 264,865.
