Abstract

679,334. Water electrolyzers. LONZA ELEKTRIZITATSWERKE UND CHEMISCHE FABRIKEN AKT.-GES. Nov. 30, 1950 [Nov. 30, 1949], No. 29366/50. Class 41. A pressure-operated water electrolyzer of filter-press type is provided with cells each having bipolar main electrodes 5, 6, and auxiliary wire-gauze electrodes 9, 10 which are held closely in contact with the main electrodes and with a diaphragm 7 by the pressure produced by the means for clamping the cells together. The cell frames 1, 2 carry rims 3, 4 to which metal sheet electrodes 5, 6 are welded, and the diaphragm 7 is clamped between the frames. The auxiliary electrodes have vertical weft threads which are thicker than the warp threads, providing vertical channels for escape of gas. They are spot-welded to the main electrodes, and the mesh sheet 9 which acts as the auxiliary anode is nickel-plated, together with the main anode, after being spot-welded. The auxiliary cathode 10 and the electrode 6 are of iron. The part of the diaphragm 7 outside the region contacted by the auxiliary electrodes 9, 10 is compacted by pressure and may be impregnated with paraffin wax or coated on both sides with metal 13, 14 of perforated nickel foil. In a modification, the nickel foil is replaced by close-mesh wire-gauze which extends over the whole of the diaphragm on each side, forming part of the auxiliary electrodes.
