Abstract
1433693 Cathodes for electrolysis HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 18 June 1974 [5 July 1973] 26985/74 Heading C7B A cathode structure useful in diaphragm chloralkali cells comprises a metal enclosure having positioned therein a foraminous peripheral metal chamber 16 which has in communication therewith a plurality of foraminous metal projections 18 of substantially rectangular cross-section. Each projection includes reinforcement comprising metal sheet 24 extending therethrough and having a plurality of projections 25 extending to the side walls. Projections 18 may extend the full cathode width as shown, or may terminate near the cathode mid-point leaving a central anolyte downcomer space. The foraminous parts may be of mesh or perforated sheet of steel Ti, Ni, Cr, Cu, Fe or Ta. The reinforcement is preferably Cu centrally located between and attached to the cathode sidewalls by way of either metal or plastics pins in evenly or randomly spaced holes or punched out extensions. The foraminous projections may be rivetted or spot-welded to the reinforcement projections. A porous diaphragm may be deposited on the foraminous cathode outer surface, e.g. a woven fabric structure of asbestos or a halogencontaining or ion-exchange synthetic polymer. Anodes 22 of e.g. graphite or Ti (with or without a noble metal/metal oxide coating) may extend between the projections 18.
