Abstract
1,166,067. Mercury cathode cells. FRIEDRICH UHDE G. m. b. H. Nov. 8, 1966 [Nov. 8, 1965, No. 50013/66. Heading C7B. In an electrolytic cell suitable for the manufacture of chlorine and an alkali metal amalgam from an aqueous alkali metal chloride solution, comprising a flat horizontal plate anode 10 and a flowing mercury cathode, instead of a cell cover there is provided a metal cover plate 12 attached to the top of the anode and a flexible elastic membrane 19 of a corrosion-resistant gas-tight rubber or plastics material extending from the top of the anode to the cell wall to render the cell gas tight. If a plurality of anodes are used they may be provided with a single cover plate 12 or separate cover plates which are connected together by flexible elastic membranes 19. As shown the cell 1 is supported upon a carrier construction 2 which is connected to foundations 6 via insulators 5. The anode 10 is supported from carrier device 4 via bolts 13, and electrolyte is supplied to the space between the anode 10 and cell bottom 11 via pipe 14 and channel 8 which is provided with a weir so that electrolyte flows uniformly into the interior of the cell. The mercury cathode may flow at right angles to the direction of flow of the electrolyte.
