Abstract

1420. Du Bois, H. M. Jan. 17. Alkalis and chlorine, obtaining; electrodes; electrolytes, circulating.-Electrolyte flows from an anode compartment to a cathode compartment through a gas-tight seal, and then across the electrolvtic field between the cathode and a porous diaphragm. A part of the electrolyte may flow through the diaphragm itself. In the cell shown, the diaphragm C is in contact with vertical ribs on the cathode A, which forms the cell wall. The gas-tight seal comprises two annular partitions F, H attached to the cell cover and an intermediate partition attached to the top of the diaphragm. In the manufacture of alkalis from chlorides, any hypochlorites contained in the anode electrolyte are reduced by ascending hydrogen before reaching the cathode, which is thus protected against corrosion. An annular trough I collects the liquid cathode product. The anode consists of a ring of carbon rods D near the diaphragm.
