Abstract

870,245. Furnace electrodes. ELECTROKEMISK A.S. Feb. 29, 1960 [Feb. 27, 1959], No. 7054/60. Addition to 813,216. Class 39(3). In a method of forming self baking continuous anodes as disclosed and claimed in the parent Specification, rows of lateral contact studs are used for the current supply and the studs 9 of at least the lowest row are connected to current supply rods 12 both electrically and mechanically whereas the higher contact studs in an incompletely baked part of the anode are connected only electrically by means of flexible, non supporting conductors 11 to the current supply rods. Each anode block 1, 2 or 3 may contain two or more holes for receiving contact studs, the holes being formed one above the other and adjacent rows of blocks of anodes may be staggered vertically relative to one another such that blocks of one stud are half a block higher or lower than those in an adjacent stack. Deformation of the stud holes in the early baking stages is avoided by the use of aluminium filling plugs which are removed when the contact stud is to be inserted. Such anodes are designed for use in an aluminium electrolysis furnace.
