Abstract
855,223. Fused - electrolyte cells. REYNOLDS METALS CO. May 11, 1959 [May 20, 1958], No. 16079/59. Class 41 An anode assembly for an electrolytic cell. for producing aluminium comprises a pack of prebaked carbon slabs 9 arranged with their lower ends extending down into the molten electrolyte 13, the opposed faces of the slabs being slightly spaced over at least a substantial area of their lower portions, e.g. by metal plates 10, to provide deep channels 14 extending upwardly from the electrolyte 13, the channels 14 being closed at the top and open at the sides to provide escape routes for gases. Several packs of slabs may be employed, each pack of slabs 9 and plates 10 being adjustably clamped at D between end plates 25 which are releasably supported by hangers 17 connected at 48 to the movable part 49 of a jack D <SP>1</SP>. The jacks D <SP>1</SP> are supported by a frame C which is vertically adjustable by jacks C<SP>1</SP> through rods 15 at each corner of the frame C so that the slabs 9 and plates 10 may be moved together by operating the jacks C <SP>1</SP>, or the plates may be moved relatively to the slabs by loosening the clamp D and operating the jacks D 1, lugs 11 on the plates 10 resting on a part 23 secured between the plates 25. The jacks D <SP>1</SP> also enable one end of a pack to be lowered more than the other, the clamp D being kept tight. Each pack is suspended by a rod 20 and cap 21 from a removable bridge 18, and a clamp 19 must be actuated by a lever 34 to hold the rod 20 still before operation of the jacks D 1. The clamp 19 is normally loose, the packs being supported from the frame C through the hangers 17, and therefore a pack may be removed by simply unhooking the hangers 17 from a rod 29 on the plates 25 and removing the bridge 18. The plates 10 are electrically connected to busbars 28 through flexible leads 22 and straps 12 connected to the lugs 11.
