625,861. Electrolytic production of aluminium. NORSKE AKTIESELSKAB FOR ELEKTROKEMISK INDUSTRI. Dec. 30, 1946, No. 37987. Convention date, Feb. 23, 1942. [Class 41] [Also in Group XI] In an electrolytic cell for the production of aluminium, of the type employing a self. baking anode 2, a metallic protective mantle 1 surrounding the upper part of the anode extends a short distance below the upper boundary of the baked zone of the anode, and the lower part extending to the crust 4 of the electrolytic bath 11 is protected by a layer of alumina 3. The layer is maintained in contact with the anode 2 by inclined plates 5 slidable on rails 6. The rails have side extensions 6<SP>1</SP> to form packing funnels for the alumina. A gas chamber 10 is formed beneath the plates 5 and covers 8. Pieces of cryolite or solidified alumina may be placed between the extensions 6<SP>1</SP> at the bottom to prevent fine-grained alumina from running out of the funnels.
