Abstract
539,568. Pistons. KAMMER, G. S. May 8, 1940, No. 8284. [Class 122 (i)] In a three-part piston in which the skirt 1, Fig. 1, the body 2 carrying the gudgeon-pin bosses, and the crown 6 are welded or otherwise fastened together, the skirt is of a material having a substantially higher co-efficient of expansion than the body, and is attached thereto at a distance from the crown, so that a packing-ring interposed between the skirt and the body in the neighbourhood of the crown is tightened by the differential expansion. The body is preferably of steel, and the skirt of a light alloy, such as an aluminium or magnesium alloy. The skirt may be attached to the body by screws 3, and a joint-ring 4 is held between them. This may be a gas-filled ring engaged between conical surfaces on the skirt and body. The space between the crown and the body may contain insulating and refractory material 5, such as fireclay, alumina, asbestos, or spongy aluminium. The refractory material 8, Fig. 2, may itself form the crown, and may be held in position by a flange 9 of the body. The material 18 i strengthened by a surface coating of electrodeposited metal or by glazing. Additional flanged supports 10, Fig. 3, may be provided for the refractory material.
