Abstract
864,775. Fused-electrolyte cells. PECHINEY COMPAGNIE DE PRODUITS CHIMIQUES ET ELECTROMETALLURGIQUES. July 12, 1957 [July 13, 1956], No. 22203/57. Class 41. An electrolytic cell of the three-layer type for refining aluminium has metallic current supply means 3 which penetrate into the cell to establish direct contact with the molten alloy 4 to be refined when the alloy is in the cell. The means 3 comprise a bar or bars which may be horizontal, vertical or oblique, and may be cooled at their outer ends 8 by a cooling fluid. The bars 3 may be of iron base alloys, cast iron, or stainless or common steel. If desired, carbonaceous soles may be retained as anode leads in the base of the cell to facilitate starting, electrically in parallel with the bars 3, and a chamber 11 for segregating iron-rich crystals 12 may be provided. In one example, in which a number of steel bars 3 were cooled at their ends 8 by allowing water to drop on them, an anodic voltage of 0.19 was achieved employing 18,000 amps. at a current density in the bars of 30 amps. per square cm.
