Abstract

550,216. Electric arc furnaces. BRASSERT & CO., Ltd., H. A., and NISSIM, R. May 2, 1942, No. 5932. [Class 39 (iii)] An electric arc furnace provided with alternating current from a plurality of transformers has an electrode 10 projecting upwards through its roof 17, charging floor 18 and roof 19. Inductively compensated leads 14 extend from each transformer below the floor 18 to a branch point 15, whence separate uncompensated leads 13 are taken to two electrode clamps 22. The points 15, 22 are approximately at the same level and as close together as possible so that the length of the uncompensated leads is a minimum. A modification is described for an open furnace, Fig. 4 (not shown), in which the points 15, 22 are close together, and another modification for a closed furnace, Fig. 6, in which the transformers are located below the furnace, and the compensated leads 14 are constituted by two sections of the furnace wall, or may be carried by the wall.
