Feb. 27, 1930, No. 6567. Convention date, Feb. 27, 1929. [Class 39 (iii).] The plane of winding of the coil 4 is inclined to the axis of the coil. The lengths of the secondary paths are thereby increased. The bottom 8 of the crucible 1 is parallel to the plane of winding. The combined effect is said to reduce splashing at the centre of the crucible and to produce an inclined surface 9 of the charge. Insulated annular segments 6, 7 of sheet iron are provided at the top and bottom of the coil to prevent stray fields. In a modifical the plane of winding is partly inclined and partly perpendicular to the coil axis. In another modification the plane is inclined downwards from the centre to the sides.
