Abstract
301,954. Northrup, E. F. Sept. 8, 1927. Induction furnaces.-In a furnace wherein the coil 1 is not penetrated by transformer iron, a magnetic return path 4<d> surrounded by a magnetizing winding 11 is provided external to the coil. The freedom from stray fields thus produced enables metal shells to be used for strengthening the furnace. A number of similar paths may be arranged so as to surround the whole coil, each path having its own winding or one winding being arranged around the whole structure. The magnetizing windings may be in series with the inductance coil. Fig. 14 shows a melting furnace with external iron paths 16 surrounded by windings 14 and a. steel shell 17. The horizontal portions 16<a> may form one unbroken portion if desired. A circulation of the metal in the crucible is produced which results in a concave surface. A furnace for re-heating ingots and open at both ends is shown in Fig. 15.
