Abstract

680,809. Electric induction heating. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., FURZEY, D. A. Aug. 15, 1950 [July 12, 1949], No. 18412/49. Class 39(iii) High frequency induction heating apparatus comprises a multi turn coil 11 substantially wholly enclosed in a metal casing adapted to surround the work to be heated and having a substantially smooth interior free from projections, the casing being formed by two concentric cylinders 20, 21, e.g. of copper, each having a slit and the casing being closed by two annular plates 24, 26 which each have a slit aligned with the two coincident slits in the cylinders 20, 21. The slits in the cylinders 20, 21 are longitudinal, and radial in the plates 24, 26 and all may be tapped and insulated. The inductor is vertically adjustable on a pillar 33 by means of collars 31, 32 engaging therewith, the collars 31, 32 being fixed to a bracket 30 supporting the inductor. Metal sheathed leads 12 are taken from the coil 11 to terminals 14, and cooling water is supplied to the coil 11 from nipples 15. The plates 24, 26 may be hollow and watercooled, and an insulating outer casing may be provided, see Fig. 4 (not shown). The inductor may heat a pot 10 containing parts to be outgassed, or may heat metal cylinders for hair-curling. The casing prevents discharges in the rarefied gases in a vacuum furnace heated by the inductor.
