Abstract

695,220. Heat treatment. METROPOLI TAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO._, Ltd. Oct. 11, 1951 [Dec. 5, 1950], No. 29768/50. Class 72 In a process for continuous heattreatment of metal strip or the like by electric induction heating followed by quenching, the cold untreated strip is preheated by passing it in heat-exchange relationship with the hot strip before the latter is quenched. As shown, strip 1 is annealed by heating it in an induction coil 6 and passing it through a pipe 4 where it gives up heat to the untreated wire, the pipe 4 being of sufficient length to cool the strip to a temperature such that quenching in the bath 15 will not re-harden it. A neutral or reducing gas is fed into the pipe 4 through an inlet 19, or alternatively given off at the annealing temperature by a material with which the strip is coated, and drawn off at 3 by a suction fan 21. The strip is finally drawn through pinch-rolls 16 and 17 and wound on to a spool 18.
