Abstract
621,233. Annealing. LUDLOW, J. H., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 7, 1947, No. 3740. [Class 72] In the continuous annealing of small section strip or wire the strip material is passed through a passage surrounded by an induction heating coil and thereafter through a cooling duct to a quenching bath, the passage being closed from the inlet end to a point below the surface of the quenching liquid and neutral or reducing gas being supplied or generated in the passage, the strip being cooled sufficiently in the duct to avoid hardening on.quenching. As shown, the strip passes into a refractory tube 4 surrounded by an induction coil 5, through a cooling duct 6 which may be jacketed into a quenching tank 9 and finally to a roll-up coil 17. Hydrogen or other gas may enter the duct through the tube 14 or a coating on the strip may be burned off to provide a protective atmosphere, the exhaust gas being burned or extracted by a fan.
