Abstract
632,613. Annealing brass. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and DOVEY, D. M. Nov. 11, 1947, No. 30002. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group II] In a method of continuously annealing brass or like alloy containing a volatile constituent, the alloy is passed through a heating chamber of small volume and flash annealed and then through a cooling chamber, a protective gas, e.g. cracked ammonia, being supplied at the entrance end of the heating chamber and the exit end of the cooling chamber and removed at a point preferably at the junction of the heating and cooling chambers, such that none of the volatile constituent is deposited on the alloy in the cooling chamber. As shown, a brass wire or strip 3 passes through a tube 2, the heating part of which is mounted in a muffle furnace 1 which may be heated by electric elements 6. A neutral gas is led into the tube through tubes 8, one at the entrance to the heating chamber and the other at the exit end of the cooling chamber and out through a tube 9 of such a position that the temperature is above that at which the volatile constituent-zinc-is condensed. The temperature in the heating zone may be 1000‹ C.
