Abstract
525,936. Cleaning and tinning metals; annealing; automatic control systems. SYNCRO MACHINE CO. March 3, 1939, No. 7027. Convention date, March 18, 1938. [Classes 72 and 82 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXXV] In a method of heat-treating metal strands such as wire or strip, which may be followed by tinning, the strand is passed through an elongated ribbon-like Bunsen flame at a position in the flame close to the boundary between the burning and unburnt gases, and is then passed directly to and cooled in an inert atmosphere. The flame may be oxidizing, or the strand may be passed first through an oxidizing flame and then through a reducing flame. In the apparatus shown, wire is passed through a tube 1 comprising sections A, B, and C containing respectively an oxidizing flame, a reducing flame and an inert cooling gas ; or the section C may be cooled by a water jacket, or the wire therein may be cooled by water jets, or a water bath. The wire is then passed into a tinning pot 14 which is provided with means for automatically feeding tin thereto as required, and for determining the thickness of the coating. A supply of tin 21 is provided in a casing 19 having a perforated bottom 20 through which molten tin passes to the pot 14 when the tin 21 is heated by a gas burner 22 which is automatically ignited when an electro-magnetically operated valve 29 in the gas supply pipe is opened, this operation occurring when an electric circuit 35 is broken through the level 18 of the molten tin falling out of contact with an electrode 36. A well 12 is provided to catch any tin escaping from the tinning pot 14 through the inlet 38.
