Abstract
415,428. Metal - heating furnaces. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and CAPLAN, M. C., c/o General Electric Co., Wembley, Middlesex. Feb. 18, 1933, No. 5068. [Class 51 (ii).] In a furnace for annealing continuous lengths of an alloy containing a volatile constituent at annealing temperature, e.g. brass, the entry and exit apertures in the furnace are not watersealed but are arranged to fit the strip or the like sufficiently closely to prevent any appreciable loss of the volatile constituent. As shown, applied to a furnace having a heating chamber 1, fitted with electric heating elements, and a water-jacketed cooling chamber 2, the entry and exit apertures 4 are sealed by strips of felt pressed into contact with the strip 10 by springs. Rollers may be substituted for the felt strips, while, in the case of wire, the seals may be constituted by constrictions in tubes through which the wire passes. Purified hydrogen is supplied through a pipe 7 and the interior of the furnace is saturated with the volatile constituent before the annealing proper begins.
