Abstract

504,432. Supply system for discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. July 18, 1938, No. 21259. Convention date, July 28, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] A high - pressure mercuryvapour discharge lamp is. run at a watt loss per centimetre which exceeds 30 whereby it has a positive characteristic and may be run directly from the supply or in series with a resistance which does not take more than 10 per cent of the supply voltage. Such a lamp 2 is con. nected in series with an impedance 8 during starting and running up, this impedance being wholly or partly shortcircuited by a bimetal switch 10. A separate small series impedance may or may not be provided. Alternatively, the series impedance may be constituted by a negative temperature coefficient resistor so that after running up its resistance has the requisite very low or zero value. If a finite small series impedance is used it may be constituted by the usual iron wire in hydrogen. The speed of run up may be increased. by utilizing the heating effect of the starting impedance. The run up period may be avoided by including a filling of a gas at a pressure such that a high-pressure discharge is started in which case auxiliary starting means are used such as h.f. voltage or contacting electrodes. A.C. or D.C. supply may be used. Some or all of the elements may be enclosed in the outer envelope 1 surrounding the discharge lamp 2.
