Abstract

414,278. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Suits, C. G. ; 1740, Union Street, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Dec. 11, 1933, No. 34826. Convention date, Dec. 23,1932. [Class 39 (i).] In a flash lamp supplied from an alternating- current source and having starting anodes 8 the control is entirely electrical, the discharge being started at intervals less than the frequency of the source. A non-linear pulsating circuit 10 comprising the condenser 11, resistance 12 and reactance 13 is connected across the supply circuit the core for the reactance being saturated by the direct-current winding 14. The starting anodes are connected through the resistances 18 to the circuit 10. Owing to the increase in resistance in the reactance on flow of current, the starting circuit can be energized once or ten times per second depending on resistance values. The reactance may comprise two windings 20, 21, Fig. 2, in parallel wound on separate legs of a core the single saturating winding 22 surrounding both legs ; or separate reactances in series may be used.
